The Embarrassment of Being Conservative

When I was coming out of the closet and was solidly in my "bi now gay later" phase, I used to say, "I like guys" but I'd hastily add, "but I like girls too!". These days, I'm feeling the same way about being a conservative. Conservative used to mean smaller government, and lower deficits. Now it means anti-democrat (at all costs - including to your ideals), anti-gay, anti-science, anti-anti. So now when I identify myself as conservative, I usually hastily add, "but not Sarah Palin conservative!"

Stephen Bainbridge (another conservative) wrote it best in this article. It's worth a read.
