Sinking In

It's starting to sink in the magnitude of the journey I'm about to undertake. Sometimes when I think of what a trip like this would be like in my Camry and compare it to what it will be like with the bike, it reminds me that the latter is a real physical challenge and the former is "just a road trip". The bike is an immensely important part of the equation in terms of what makes this a journey and a growth experience. 4,000 miles. Wow. The funny thing is, one day, I'll probably take a 7,000 mile trip and look back and think, pffft. 4,000 miles. Big deal. :)

The weight on the bike is still bothering me. I'm turning it over in my head thinking of how I can pare my gear down a bit more. The point behind choosing the roads I've chosen was to have fun in the twisties. But throwing an aircraft carrier over from side to side for 4,000 miles will not be fun. So I need to get the bike to be a little more nimble. I've already considered a few small items to remove which will make some weight difference. I won't sacrifice safety even though I think I'm massively over-preparing in that department. I suspect that I'll pare that down for my next trip once I see how things go with this one.

All in all, aside from a few last minute to-do's, it's a waiting game. I leave a week from Saturday.
